After experiments, I like a bench height at my belt line. Higher, and I'm straining to plane comfortably. Lower and I must bend closer to see fine fork (dovetails, tenons, etc). It's easy enough to raise workpieces, difficult to lower bench height. Have a browse if Jin Tolpin's "The New Traditional Woodworker". It takes a reasoned approach to (judicious) use if power tools. Some tasks (such as morticing by hand) wreck my elbow and require a power tool crutch in my shop. Bright task lighting will improve your performance on a bench of any height.
