This design was created by Nancy R. Hiller and published in the October 2018 issue of FWW magazine. Her design used a wall paper background for the open shelf. I chose to use a carving for the background instead. The only other change I made from Nancy's design is the thickness of the back panels. My lower back panel 3/8" thick. And the carved panel is 3/4" thick. Nancy used 5/16" for her backs.
This was my first attempt at handcut dovetails and thru mortises. I was sure I was going to ruin a piece before I got all the joints cut. While all the joints are not perfect, I was able to hide the mistakes pretty good.
I made this as a wedding gift for my daughter. Its Sapele with a Basswood carving. Finish his Tried and True Danish Oil with 3 over coats of Minwax Tung Oil Finish, and a final coat of microcrystalline wax. I chose swans because they are a symbol of fidelity and mate for life.
