What kind of wood is this?

I'm new to the woodworking hobby and have a fair amount of this laying around where I work as well as some oak and poplar. All of which were knoked down by Hurricane Isabel. I believe one is hickory and the other is walnut. I plan on using it on my Jet mini lathe if possible for bowls, etc... If not I guess it will make good practice pieces.

First one likely is black walnut. No clue on the second one.
