I had come across an article about using un-tinted urethane alkyd (oil based) paint as a clear finish for outdoor projects. The author stated that "deep base" or number "5" according to the manufacturers specifications is key in obtaining a clear finish after the product dries. I picked up a gallon of Benjamin Moore Super Spec Urethane Alkyd CP22 - 4B and applied one thin coat to a piece of cherry. It went on with a very light/almost translucent milky white color and has now dried clear. I am surprised and impressed that my results were positive after being quite skeptical that it would in fact work. The only downside so far is that it's not available in satin or matte, but it's not a deal breaker for me
