I think the surprising thing is most (if not all) of us would've thought the end grain to end grain would've been weaker than long grain to long grain. That doesn't appear to be true and surprised me. But he also shows it is still a weak joint and only somewhat better than loading wood in its weakest direction. However, not surprisingly, using wood as the tree grows and relying on its strength lengthwise optimizes the strength of wood.
