"Too much time spent polishing your image, tarnishes your character." -- Heard Dale Brown (former LSU basketball coach) say it, but not sure it's his quote.
You can't always get what you want.
But if you try sometimes, you might find you get what you need

"We require from buildings, as from men, two kinds of goodness: first, the doing their practical duty well: then that they be graceful and pleasing in doing it; which last is itself another form of duty. "
"There is scarcely anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse, and sell a little more cheaply. The person who buys on price alone is this man's lawful prey."

"Treat others exactly as you would want them to treat you."
A common sentiment that is pretty much 100% wrong, at least as literally read. "Treat others as they would like to be treated" is closer. Or just treat them with respect and generosity.
It took me the first half of my life to finally figure out that other people don't like being treated the way I like to be treated. I place a very high value (indeed an extreme value) on logic and data and regard emotions and feelings as something that purely inhibits logical thinking (I did not find Mr. Spock even remotely odd). I have emotions, but always try to discount them. It took a really long time to learn that lots of people make choices based on emotion, and that their feelings are really important to them-- as important as my logical analysis is to me. Treating people the way I wanted them to treat me was an utter disaster!
In the end we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends
