Making Wooden Gears Technique

SawMill Creek Member Steve Garrison has developed a technique for cutting involute profile gears using either a scroll saw or a table saw. The types of gears that can be made using this technique include the following: spur, helical, herringbone, and elliptical. There are no special tools required, and the technique is easy to understand once you see how it works. There are four parameters that can be entered into an Excel spreadsheet: number of teeth, diametrical pitch, pressure angle, and helix angle if you want to make helical gears. With these parameters, the spreadsheet outputs all the needed dimensions calculated with the same simple formulas that mechanical engineers use for designing gears. It sounds complicated but it is not. Any woodworker who has a drill press, bench top disc sander, and either a scroll saw or table saw can learn how to make gears with this technique. It is much less tiring and more accurate than the old method. It is a lot of fun, and very unique. Visit Steve Garrisons “Gear” page on his web site at http://steveg769.bizland.com/id5.html for more information. While you are there, feel free to look at his artwork on the other pages too and make sure you watch Steve's videos.
Steve will email a download link for one copy of his gear making technique to the winner.
