So I've been collecting white oak wood knees - any clean bend that more or less matched a Whitehall skiff rib or stem profile was bandsawed to 8/4 or so, waxed, and stuck up in the rafters. I got the idea from an old boatbuilder decades ago, but I don't see or hear of anyone else doing this kind of stuff. Have I been going on a fool's errand all these years, or are there people who build skiffs with natural-grown knees? Most of what I see these days is laminated ribs. Seems there's enough for a bunch of skiffs, and I'm wondering if it's actually worth building something with them.
Anybody else out there doing this?
