My first attempt at a suspended. Kingwood body with walnut lid. Sanded to 600, MM and beall. And I only smacked my finger once!

Great looking piece. Yep I did one just to say I did it and after hitting my knuckle probably won't do many more.

Nice looking box! I attempted one.....got my knuckles busted....pitched it in the trash!

That looks great! I have been planing on trying one of these as soon as I get a blank that size.
Hope the dinged digit has healed.

Wow. Very nice wood and form. I really like it!

You don't need a big block. Now that I've done one, I'll probably do one smaller. Big is scary!

Tim,
I realize that anyone can be a genius after the fact, but my understanding of a suspended bowl or box was that when it was sitting on all four points, the bottom of the bowl was (suspended) off of the surface. I'm not sure from the photo if this is the case. Can we get some comments on this, because I'm not sure if my interpretation is correct?
Kurt
Tim, your interpretation is correct -- a suspended bowl typically only touches the "ground" on it's feet. However, that's just a design decision. No one from the woodturning police will come and carry you away if you make the "bowl part" so large it touches the ground.
Great job, both form and finish.

It is the photo that is the problem. I have not made a dedicated photo box and the angle is off on the bottom of my support. It actually clears by about 2 mm. Maybe not that much but you can slide paper under it on a flat surface. I got to deep inside to make more clearance.
