Thread: OK, you computer brainiacs

    Question OK, you computer brainiacs

I have a Sony desktop. I was using Outlook Express for my email. I deleted all McAfee stuff for Norton. My wife did the same on her HP. She doesn't have this problem

If I restart, in about 5 minutes, I can't delete email. I can't drag email. Once that starts I can't open url's from ICQ. I can't close ICQ. I can close OE and reopen, but in a few minutes it does the same thing.

I have emptied recylce bin, temp files, etc. I defragged. I have removed and reinstalled OE several times. I washed the dog and gave the cat away. I sharpened all my chisels and re-aligned my tablesaw. Nothing seems to help.

I can run Outlook instead, and never have this problem. I would rather have OE.

I give up. What's going on?

    Hey Howard,

Did you have the McAfee set up to scan your emails? I heard somewhere once that if the uninstall isn't complete certain email programs can hang when a new anti-virii program is installed. There's an website that you can use to virus scan your computer,

if Klez has disabled your Norton this is a good way to tell.

    My guess

I would assert that you have a virus. Most likely
one that fills up memory to the point that nothing
else works--your swap file grows so huge that your
harddrive can't keep up with the writes.
Seems to me if you're using Outlook, this is symptomatic
of many virii, the most contemporary of which is an
Internet worm named Klez, which LOVES Outlook.

Interestingly, Klez also deletes Norton, and any installs
of it. It also infects the headers of ALL executable files
on your system, spreads through your network connections,
and infects programs already resident in memory. If this is
what it is, download the Klez utility, restart in safe mode
and have it scan the active memory, which will then prompt
to remove the virus if it finds it.

Of course, it could be any number of things-- hard drive going
bad causing a hang up and sluggish programs. Outlook uses
quite a bit of memory, as does explorer-

I hope it's nothing serious, but as you know, it's difficult
to diagnose anything without seeing it in front you.

Norton is running and catches stuff every day. Most of them are Klez. Full system scans show nothing wrong.

    Jim,
All of McAfee is gone. Norton is still running. What doen't make sense is, if I run Outlook nothing happens. It works as expected. Only OE does this.

    Thanks,
    Howard
