    INCRA hinge crafter tutorial.

This is a step by step build using the Incra Hinge crafter jig I use to make the wooden hinges used on my Humidors.
I thought this would be a nice compliment to the great tutorial Jason has posted(see http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=89894).

The first step is to make a block approximately 5"x8"x3/8" with the grain running in the shorter direction. Next you will go to the router table and create a 3/8" bull nose on the 2 end grain edges.

Now turn the piece vertically and make a pass to create a 3/4 round over as seen in the picture.

Now change to the 3/8" dado bit and remove the additional material by passing the piece over the bit with a depth of approximately 1/4" deep. Move the fence away from the hinge in order to create the tab of the hinge.

Now using the 3/8" bit set to a depth of 3/8"long, put a backer board and then the hinge, start making 3/4" passes to create the fingers of the hinge. It's VERY important that the bit be sharp. Once you've done one side, flip it over, offset your cuts by 3/8" and start making the cuts at 3/4" again. This will offset the fingers of the hinge so the 2 will line up. After this has been done you can separate the 2 pieces of the hinge.

Now the 2 pieces are ready for the Hinge crafter. The purpose of the hinge crafter is to drill the hole directly down the middle of the hinge so it will have its pivot point.

Now push a 1/8" brass pin through the hinge and cut it flush. You now have a beautiful wooden hinge that is quite durable. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Please enjoy.

Thanks Glenn. I hope some members get a chance to try this. I forgot to mention you can do this with a 3/8" stacked dado blade on the tablesaw too. As long as you have an incra fence.

So how much is Incra paying you?

    Bill,

    I am kidding!

I plan to add the hinge crafter to my Incra arsenal soon and this may have put it over the top!

Thanks for your outstanding contributions to the creek!

Paying me. You mean you can make money at this?????? I can't even afford to pay attention. I did win a festool sander a couple months ago but that's the closest I've come to being paid. If I quit my day job to do this.......I'd have to get a night job.
