Cross-posting of pics between threads?

I need some direction on the cross-posting of pics between forums or threads in the same forum. For example: In a Neanderthal forum thread I attach a group of pics showing finds from a recent rust hunt. In another Neander thread a week later I try to post one of the same pics as it's relevant to that specific thread. I get a message that I've already posted that pic and the upload is aborted. If I change the name of the pic the same thing happens.

Pretend I'm dumb as a stump (I'm not, but I digress...) How does one pull this off without attaching a URL to Flickr.com or some other pic hosting site?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Right click on the pic in the original thread and do the Properties choice on the context menu. Drag your mouse over the text to copy the URL from the properties window. Then hit Ctrl-C to copy it into the clipboard. Then paste the URL into the new thread like I just did.

Edit:
Oops. For some reason I'm not seeing the pic using the first method.
But using the little Insert Image icon (the one with the little mountains) and pasting the URL into that is working.

I usually just adjust the size of the picture slightly and repost it as a new pic...you don't need to change the name.

However, Doug's idea is maybe faster and easier once you get the hang of it so I may try that route now. The only potentially painful part is looking for the original thread where that pic resides...any hints for that, Doug?

If you posted the pic originally, go to User CP/Attachments. Find the attachment in the list. A Link to the thread is shown in the "Title" column.

Testing

This is the result of pasting the URL using the insert image icon but deleting the ampersand and eveything else after the "attachmentid=89283". The first try doesnt want to show anything except the thumbnail.
Gotta be a way to do this and have it display a thumnail but still enlarge when you click on the pic

Even better than a URL.. go to your UserCP to find the picture, and grab the attachment ID.

In your post, just use :

Just replace AttachID with the number.
This way, you get the thumbnail, and all the other nice features.

I'm dumber than the stump since I never asked about this.

In an effort to redeem myself, is it possible for the board to offer an option to link to the existing uploaded pic instead of just saying "no can do"?

Oh, my...it's faster to search for the original thread than it is to go through hundreds (literally) of pre-existing images in my UserCP! LOL

On a slightly related note, your earlier post had me going to UserCP and looking at my attachments that way for the first time in ages. Cant seem to find this on another thread, but what exactly increments the Download count for the attachments? Does that get bumped just by clicking on a thumbnail to see the full sized pic? Or just by using the context menu "Save Picture As.." option? Other? All of the Above? Just curious as I'm not sure I noticed the download count prior to this.

on-topic test post using the ATTACH tag

OK, why doesn't the attach tag act the same as an original pic posting?

I will perform an experiment to find out.

Test to determine tag code for original pic attachment.

Here is a random small size pic so as not to waste bandwidth:

raincircles.gif

Hmmm, it uses the same tag code as the waterfall pic recycled in the previous post but how does it behave? (i.e. it uses the "attach attachment ID /attach" tag code - each tag in square brackets as usual).

And it behaves differently, displaying as a thumbnail rather than as a link, like the subsequent attaching does. Is this difference in behavior something to do with my settings (perhaps a default option) that can be changed in UserCP or is this difference inherent to the VBulletin software version used here?
