Thread: Lacquering leather

  1. Lacquering leather

I've been spraying lacquer on leather, and sometimes it turns white. I know from lacquering wood that this can happen from the lacquer being cold, or not spraying enough material so that the lacquer is drying too quickly on the surface (at least that is my understanding). The leather I am lacquering is vegetable tanned cowhide and has no sealer prior to lacquering, and therefor is very absorbent. I am guessing that is the source of the problem. Any suggestions on how to avoid this problem? Once the lacquer goes white I don't know how to save it.

    Thanks, Tom

  2. I think I figured it out. Gloss lacquer goes on clear, but flat lacquer turns whitish. Must be the flattening paste that causes the problem.

I spray my lacquer with a quart cupgun......I always put an ounce or two of lacquer retarder with it. I haven't had lacquer blush, or turn white in quite a while. You might try it
