    Completed Table w/ Pics

Just finished up a writing desk based on a David Marks Design. Changed around most of the dimensions to work with the material I had and made a few other tweaks to better fit with my tastes. Hope you enjoy the pics. Must say I learned a lot on this project being my first attempt at veneer and drawers.

    Excellent Work!

Very nice work Matthew! I've got that WoodWorks episode taped and have the table on my list of projects to build at some point. Your choice of wood for the top instead of using Zebrawood looks nice too.

    Cheers!

    Nice.

I like the rails/legs framing the top. Its something I want to try when I get a chance. Nice contrast in the wood selection too ...

Beautiful table you did a fantastic job! I love the top.

Are you going to put a drawer pull on?

Very nice job all around but the veneer is really an outstanding piece.

I haven't done much veneering but pieces like that (and a recent curly walnut pic) make me want to get that vac press ordered.

Thanks for all the compliments guys!! I will add a drawer pull just havn't figured out exactly what I want to do there yet.

  12. Nice. I love the pattern.
What was your method to adhere the veneer to the top ?
What is the veneer on top of ?
How thick was the veneer ?

Reason I ask is I have had some issues with veneer and longevity issues in the past and need some ideas.

The veneer is spalted maple that I bought on ebay. I cut it into proud 1/8in sheets on the band saw and then through the planer to clean of the marks. Ended up with sanded etc. at about 3/16. I used contact cement (which I have since read on here is probably not the best idea) and some cauls to attach the veneer to baltic birch ply. Hopefully it lasts....

As for finish I used boiled linseed oil and then blonde shellac.

Very nice, Matthew. That's some good looking grain on that top that immediately says, "Look at me".

    Sarge..
