    Natural Edge Finishing

    Hi Gang;
    My daughter has been bugging me for quite awhile to make her a freeform coffee table from a large walnut slab. She wants to retain the natural bark edge but I believe the edge will eventually fall off. Does anyone know of a method of finishing which will preserve the bark edges- short of sealing it with a thick epoxy, unnatural looking surface??
    Thanks
    Best regards;
    George

    I would go ahead and remove the bark, chances are it will fall off or get knocked off. Use a drawknife to remove the bark and smooth out the live edge.

    I have to agree with Dale - remove the bark. You may find a way to finish it, but you will never be able to insure the natural bond of the bark to the flitch edge. Besides, if you carefully remove the bark with hand tools - you will reveal a beautiful, naturally contoured edge that will draw the eye for sure! Good luck!

    Check out the turning forum where folks turn natural edged bowls. Many use CA glue to keep the bark on. Works for me.
