Couple of Bowls for the New Year

    Cherry Bowl 8 ¼” x 2 ¾”

    Maple Rice Bowl 8 ¼” x 2 1/8”

Both bowls were sanded to 400 grit, couple of coats of Watco ‘Natural’ Danish Oil, half dozen coats of Minwax Gloss Wipe-on Poly and then buffed.

As always – your comments and/or suggestions are appreciated!

    Thanks for looking!

Yikes, Steve! I try to look at every thread in the hopes of gaining some knowledge, and, I tell ya, half of them are of your beautiful work! But no one should consider that a negative! The maple bowls you do are always great, such a wide variety of grain patterns (including inclusions that look like creepy eyes)! I really like these, especially the shallow form on the maple one! Can't wait to see more!

Steve your really starting to turn'em out. Both pieces are beauties, the thin one is my pick. I don't see anything to suggest.

    Too much fun!

Hey neighbor , you're having way too much fun over there. And yes, there are times when we come home for the chain saw and rush back. And yes, I suspect there have been some "road Kill" bowls In your postings.

You are turning out some some wonderful bowls lately! Wish I could trade places with Robert for a week or so.

Great bowls Steve. You're working through a stash of some seriously nice maple.

    Question

Very nice. What is the reason behind the oil under the poly?

Jason - the oil pops the grain - the poly provides more of a protective finish and adds some gloss.

Probably a stupid question but, why doesn't the poly pop the grain?

Jason - I almost always use Watco - just like the way it looks and how fast it dries. I have used poly by itself and it works at popping the grain but does not give the impression of depth like the Watco. Just a personal thing I guess but I like the combination.
