    Another one bites the dust

Our son Kyle came to town yesterday for a brief stopover, and decided that he wants to turn. He grabbed a piece of the cherry that I got from John Hart earlier this year and has turned a small bowl on my mini. Here's the result:

Sorry about the not-so-great pictures--he's at the house and snapped these off while ago and sent them to me on e-mail. I'll take some better ones tonight. It's going to be a pretty little bowl when it's finished.

He just called me to tell me that he now wants a mini for birthday/Christmas. I don't know where he's gonna use it in the semi-truck , but he wants one.

    We got us another one!!!!

Shame on you, Nancy! You're supposed to be a good influence on your kids!

Congrats to you and Kyle! I'm always glad to see another new victim, er... turner in the ranks.

Ah, recruiting, where better to start than at home. Get him a set of big casters with it so he can go mobile.

    Here's the first one

As promised, here's pictures of the finished cherry bowl. It has a few cracks in it that couldn't be turned out or sanded out, so it's not perfect, but it's his first one. Cherry, 6-1/2" diameter, 2-1/2" high, walls are 1/4" thick, bottom is about 1" thick (he was a little leery of trying to go thinner for his first piece.

I may be prejudiced, but for his first piece, I think it's pretty good.

    Then when I got home....

I found that he had invaded some of my cutoffs from Tennessee and turned this one:

This little beauty is 7-7/8" in diameter, 1-7/8" high, and walls are about 3/8". No, Chris, this isn't oak--it's sassafras. Aside from a little bit of tearout, it's pert' near perfect, to my very untrained eye.

Now he's really chomping at the bit for a mini!!

    We got him!!!

Now Nancy..!!!!! That did not bite the dust. It was crafted beautifully!!! Congrats on both the turner and the desire to put a lathe in his semi to help occupy his time.
    Thanks & Happy Wood Chips,

    Nancy,

In 100 days you may find that you no longer have to work for someone else and come home with your brain tied in knots. You may find that you put in more hours, are more tired, don't have any money, but you can smile all the time because you are doing something that you truly enjoy and don't have to answer to anyone else if you don't want to! Enjoy! And have a GREAT day!!!

Thanks, Barry. After 42 years of this "stuff", I'm ready to hang up the spurs, so to speak. With a business to run, wood to burn (laser), wood to turn, and things to do.

I appreciate everyone's kind comments. I, personally, don't think that it stacks up to the work I've seen everyone else do.

As for a lathe in truck, I don't think the leasing company would like it if I modified the truck that much. My "want" of a Midi Lathe is to see if I can get my wife sucked into "The Vortex."

  14. Retirement

Nancy, there is one problem with retirement. You NEVER have a day off.
I have been retired for 17 years and enjoy it.
    Have fun

    Nice turnings Kyle. Well done.
