    gluing up cutting boards

have been using pipe clamps to glue up cutting boards. can never seem to get the strips to sit flat on the clamps. any suggestions? have thought of using i beam style clamps

Just use a caul and clamp it right to the pipe clamp.
Put packing tape on them so the glue will not stick to them.

Just as Bill stated, using cauls are the way to go. The cauls could be made from wood or, if you have some 1 inch an angle iron laying around that would work too. Unless of course you want to spend $400 on a Plano Press.

I have made a couple of cutting boards, and I used a old piece of wood, preferably a hard wood, on each side of the cutting board, running the entire length on each side. Place the pipe clamps over the top of the cutting boards, clamping the cauls on either end. I would also suggest you put some type of weight to stop each row from "sliding" up and down while clamping. I use bricks covered in duct tape, and that usually works well. Yo uamy also consider a bag with sand, or something else very heavy.

Just my two cents. Good luck, and share your photos of the completed project!
