    A cabinet for LOML

    Thanks for looking!

LOML needed a 48-inch cabinet and lots of drawer space. So, I designed something quickly to fulfill the need . Two banks of three drawers, 48 inches wide, 36-1/2 inches tall, 24 inches deep.

    1. The design concept (done in eCabinet Systems software as a learning project): Not shown in this "sketch" is the old countertop we re-used, as it was still in good shape:

And some photos of the work-in-progress:

    2. I used full-extension slides:

    3. Home-made jigs to properly center the false drawer fronts:

    4. Corner blocks on the top, and a peek at the 2 X 4s used to mount the slides:

And now for the completed project:

    5. I used a door edge profile bit to decorate the drawer edges:

    6. The finished cabinet, loaded with whatever LOML wanted to put in it :

This was a fun project. Finished with Minwax Special Walnut stain, two coats of Target Coatings' waterborne shellac, and four coats of Target's Super Clear waterborne polyurethane. Finally, buffed with 600 grit wet-dry sandpaper.

Nice work Al. It looks to be very well made.
I like the "drawer alignment system".

Really pretty cabinet, Al. Very nicely done!!! Those full-extension slides really help, don't they?

My thanks to all who have replied.

Mike, I hope the photo shows clearly this simple system: Since the face frames are 2 inches wide all around, it was a simple matter to use pocket screws to attach 1-1/2" wide pieces to a 1-inch piece to give the 1/2-inch overlap for each drawer fronts, both on the sides and the bottoms.

Roy, Jim, and Nancy: Thanks! I sure comes in handy, to get "stuff" put away. Prior to this cabinet Sandy had things laying on top of the old two-drawer cabinet, due to lack of drawer space.

    Thanks for looking!

Al, Very nice job on the cabinet! Looks like it's built like a tank.

    Thanks for looking, Peter.

Yes, it is built to be quite sturdy. Thanks for taking note. Although the corner blocks stabilize the cabinet and keep it from racking, it is the 2 X 4s I used to mount the slides that provide the best support to truly prevent any side-to-side racking.

It is amazing that even putting my full weight won't make the sides budge at all.

Peter, Your signature line is so á propos. I see it, in a way, related to your comment about the cabinet "being built like a tank, that even a caveman can do it".

I think their ads are terrific, and a (daily) reminder of not socially-acceptable "stuff". Love it!

It is not done until it's done - added the top, once I remembered how to do it in eCabinet Systems . I also modified the sides in this rendering, to make them even with the bottom of the face frame, as built. All for the record :

    Al,

Your only about 20 min drive away from me. I will have to stop in someday that I can get free. Is hard to get weekdays free but some weekends are possible. My LOML brother lives in St. Joe but has been awhile since visiting there. Been wanting to look in on the new Menards, but since I work one block away from a Home Depot, it's just a matter of convenience...
