    Walnut blotches

    Hi,
I've found that when finishing walnut using Watco Oil, the wood definitely absorbs the oil unevenly (especially when there is variations in grain) and results in a blotchy look. Same result even when I put an initial wash-coat of shellac on it. Maybe I should stick with shellac for the entire finish - doesn't seem to blotch like oil. Any thoughts?
    thanks,
    Matt

Yes, different portions of the grain absorb finish differently. I wouldn't really call this blothing, since this unevenness will disappear when subsequent coats are added. One coat of oil/varnish mix such as Watco, or one coat of thinned shellac are never enough to get a complete and even finish.
