    Project: Walnut Hall Table

I finished this table today. It is constructed of walnut and walnut burl veneer for the top. The finish is several coats of orange shellace, followed by Target USL on the top which was wet sanded and polished. I'll probably do a little more polishing, but for now I'm calling it done.

The base was actually sprayed with USL as well, but it came out too rough. When I wet sanded, the slurry got into the pores of the wood and I couldn't get it out without damaging the finish. I'll have to learn more about what to do in that situation for next time. I ended up resanding to bare wood and reapplying the shellac. After several coats, it looked really good and I decided to just leave it as-is.

Outstanding, Matt! The shellac really nailed that veneer on the top. Awesome!

Matt, that veneer is just an eye-popper. Looks great! Nice tapers on the legs too.

I like it a lot, Matt. I have used garnet shellac on walnut with good results as well. In the photos, it looks like the legs are tapered on all side. Very nice design and the veneer is gorgeous.

Another thought just occurred to me...that book matching provided a "glow" right where most folks will display some object. That will be a wonderful effect and help draw the eye to the featured item.

    Matt,
Spectacular! I looked at your previous thread on this but couldn't find any mention of how you joined the mitered top pieces together? The miters look fantastic, and it looks like you did a nice job of keeping the flow of the grain. Did you use biscuits? I once tried doing miters on a table like this with pocket holes--not a good outcome.
