iCloud Private Relay Appears to be blocked?

Starting yesterday, I’ve been getting a white screen when loading sawmillcreek in the safari browser, even after clearing all caches.

The only fix for this has been to turn off iCloud Private Relay, or choose the “temporarily show my ip address to this website” setting. My guess is SMC has a block on an IP attached to iCloud Private Relay (a VPN). Any chance this block could be removed? Private relay is the default behavior for all safari users who pay for iCloud / Apple One / etc. so you are losing that traffic.

Kory, I suspect your issue is something else. I too use Safari with iCloud Private Relay enabled. I've had no trouble accessing the forums, and have been here daily throughout this week.

I ran into this this morning, you can go into settings and choose hide "from trackers only" then it will work, you will still be hidden from trackers, but the website will know your IP address. Greg, I would check your settings in Safari because you may have private relay off in Safari if its working for you, or you already have "trackers only" set.

Unfortunately, on iOS, the only choice is to turn off private relay. I could not access this site with private relay on. On the Mac, you can set it to allow IP but not trackers

    Mike,

I've got my IP hidden "from trackers and websites".

I'm also still using content blockers on Sawmill Creek (Website settings tab).

On the Advanced settings tab, I do have the advanced tracking & fingerprint protection set for private browsing only, rather than for all browsing.

This is off and on for me. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I really think this should be investigated on the website end. There are likely many people who try to use this site from Apple devices and can't access it... Plus, there's no error message! Just a white screen. Not good. Users will assume the site is broken.

Honestly, you're the first to bring it up to the best of my knowledge...and Apple only "recently" added the private relay feature. Not a lot of folks use Safari on MacOS, at least here, (I sure don't!) but yes, it could affect folks who try and access the site with an iOS device. (I don't generally do that either, personally, since this software isn't all that mobile friendly)

I'm sure that Keith can have Aaron look into this when there is opportunity to start working down "the list" of things currently on the sheet.

    Kory,

I appreciate the inquiry. The IP block was added to an abuser list; I've modified it so it should work better, but let me know if you run into further issues.

Thanks a lot Aaron, glad to hear it was just a private relay IP block being blocked. The issue seems to be mitigated in my limited testing. Will update here if I keep hitting this.

OK, it just happened again. I think there are some IPs related to private relay that are still blocked, or your changes haven't fully propagated.

I’m having the same issue while on my iPhone. First it was just safari then chrome too. It’s been happening for about two weeks. My private relay was on. I was googling the issue and I saw the title to this thread so I disabled private relay to see if it would allow me to see content rather than just a white screen and it worked. My phone settings have been the same for a long time so it seems to be something changed with the website. This is the only website I have the problem with. Would be great to have it fixed.

    Thanks for posting this Kory.

AFAIK, there were no changes to this site other than what Aaron mentioned above in an attempt to solve the issue. It's pretty much on auto-pilot most of the time. It could very well be that a different IP block came up with the Private Relay that is also on a "no no" list, but I'm sure that Aaron will take a look when there is opportunity to do so.
