With online shopping and most vendors posting prices online even for in store purchases it isn't that hard to find a better price if someone is charging an outrageous price. Twenty or thirty years ago your point would been more valid than today.
Warren, yes I believe there is price fixing. Not sure what individual buyers can do about it, I guess we need to rely on the legal system to act.
You obviously missed my entire point.
Having to spend time doing the research is the issue.

How do you know if you're getting charged an exorbitant price? Well, you have to look at another store and again and again to find an average decent price that isn't someone trying to gouge you.
You have to wade through poorly written description of items, often failing to contain critical information. And it goes on and on
All this searching takes time. You simply can't trust anything at face value. You need to search so you verify what you're purchasing. This can be frustrating for some.

According to you, I just don't know how to shop and my point isn't valid today.
And who mentioned anything about big box stores?

So you object to doing your own research when making a purchase to get the best deal. Do you also object to doing your own research when making other decisions like what restaurants to eat at, what resorts to vacation at, what movies to watch, which cell phone to buy?

I think it was the OP that mentioned " big box auto supply house".

Re rattle can prices and also doing a little research: Advanced Protective Products Rust Destroyer spray can was $58 on the impulse-buy stand by the cash register at the local Sherwin-Williams paint yesterday. A one-quart can was $74. You can get the spray for about $48 on Amazon and the quart is $58. I hope it's good stuff. Our painter thinks we need it on some nail heads.

I see rustoleum rattle cans now have a switch nozzle with like 5 different fan patterns. Hopefully one will be unclogged when I go to use it.

can they be left soaking in something. I usually put my air cap and nozzle from spray guns in a small jar in clean Lac reducer. some air caps may not recommend that. I dont leave the sata stuff soaking for days and clean it at the time or hours later. Id think there might be some less aggressive solvent that those caps could soak in or could be asked about it. Do they say to turn the can upside down after each use to clear the nozzle. seems like it blows off propellant same time if that is a thing.

The retail prices on everything at Sherwin-Williams are sky high. You have to have an account with a decent discount, or buy during one of their many sales to get a decent price. I had to buy a gallon of paint from them one of the few times they had no sale running and it hurt at nearly $100 for a gallon. I bought that same paint for $65 to $75 per gallon during various sales. The strange thing is sometimes a certain paint will have a sale price during a percent off sale so you can get a really good price.

I once bought paint through Sherwin-Williams for a local Boy Scout camp. I knew the camp has a specific paint color so I had them look up the paint color under the camp's account. I was donating the paint, but they gave me the camp's discount. The discount was 70% due to being a non-profit!
