    Rattle can price increases ?

Why have paint "rattle cans" gone up some much in price. Just bought several cans of automotive clear coat at a big box auto supply house, $17 for a can about 9" tall. I think that's about 70% more than a couple of years ago. Has there been a change or shortage in the propellant that has caused this, or just a change in that industries price structure?

I just happen to have some records on that exact product. I bought a can off Amazon back when I was working on a tractor in Spring of 2021. I just looked up my purchase record and I bought a can of Duplicolor clearcoat for $10.99 in April 2021. I checked the current Amazon price on the exact same thing and it's $13.99.

That sounds about right. There have been issues all around with pent up demand and supply chain issues including increased cost because Russia is no longer in the world market for crude oil since invading Ukraine, not to mention inflation always being the answer to debt, but also a lot of it is just that people are expecting and willing to pay more. My Wife has a business that the product has gone up from 2500 to 3500 in that time and the waiting list is longer instead of shorter. I'm not working for other people right now, but told them that I would have to get $15 more per hour right now if I do. Three answers I got were: "I understand" "okay" and "when can you start". We could do without either of those, but would be foolish not to charge more while we can.

I once had an old man who did dirt work tell me that he knew he was charging enough when people would holler but still be willing to pay. He said if they hollered and didn't want the work that you were charging too much, and if they didn't complain that you weren't charging enough. I think a lot of it is that. Since none of my clients complained about me going up, maybe I need to go up more.

    Just bought some as well
Rust-Oleum 334076 Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover Spray Paint, 12 oz, Satin Nutmeg

It was only $6.19 on sale (11% off)
If I bought the "same" color from the OEM (knaack) paint, it would be closer to $20
Prices are all over the place

Last time I bought, Advance Auto and Amazon were priced the same. Didn't check this time, duh. Looks like Advance has adapted the "what the customer will pay" approach.

The Duplicolor is a great product, the best I've found for the outdoor copper art pieces I make.

It's not just paint, but everything. As an example, I need some parts to fix a shallow well pump. New motor, $49.99 with $35 shipping (Surplus Center.) Pentair rebuild kit FPP 1561, ranges in price from $18.99 with $12 shipping (from China) to $158 plus shipping, also made in China as all of Pentair's rebuild kits are. Shaft seals for GE dishwasher range from two sets for less than ten bucks, to about fifty bucks for a single set. STA-Rite pump $550, and identical Flotech pump (only the color is different) $249.99. Stick of 3/4" copper pipe, $36, and a ten foot length of 4" PVC (foam core) about the same. Recently needed an 1 1/4" di-electric union (copper to steel.) Priced from less than twelve bucks to almost one hundred, with all being "brand names," made in China. Copper elbows, $2.34 locally and less than a buck and a quarter from online vendor (not Ebay.) One seller on Ebay, seventy five cents each till you add in shipping which brings then to over two bucks each.

It gets tiring having to be Sherlock Holmes when trying to make a purchase.
But we all do it, if you don't you can literally, pay the price.

Paint went up during the pandemic and really hasn't come down much at all. Lots of pigments are imported and China sets the price.

What's so Sherlock Holmesy about doing your own research and shopping around to find the best price? Should all the retailers get together and set one price like a cartel? Welcome to free market capitalism.

just bought florescent bulbs and 9.00 months ago last week were 19.99. 3M green tape ive waited for auto body quality my supplier quotes me, it seems high I ask one custom car builder friend and his price same tape was half. Some half other size bit less than half. Complained and told im at the discount price. Bull

new canadian now the store manager at a place ive shopped at for 30 years. History gone with the long time knowledgeable people that have retired. So that's not just prices going up its one supplier to another.

When I bought six machines originally checking around one supplier was enough less that I got one machine for free, plus he delivered for free. Hes retired now parents owned the bus and now sold. Another good one gone. His father was very knowledgeable on woodworking machinery., German trained not just a salesman. Better price, delivered for free and trade back ground others didn't have.

Do you just like to argue, seriously.
I would like prices to be in the same "reasonable" ballpark as opposed to double or triple depending on where you shop. A difference of a few percent isn't too much to ask for but some things are outlandish.
I just saw a dust separator hood for $17 at one seller and the exact item for $47 at another.
Assuming both stores are selling items for a profit, You shouldn't have to pay double just because you bought something at store A and not store B.
The reason you need to "research" is because one seller will rip you off if you don't.
So I have to waste time so I don't get (incline planed wrapped around a shaft)
Maybe you enjoy it, I'm quite frankly, tired of it.

    actually they do that Doug.

Billionaire food store owners stores were charged with fixing bread prices, fine was many millions maybe 700 of them

To put Jam in a big store you pay them 100k to have your product in the store. If it sells well you want to be there next year they might charge you 250k for having your product in the store.

Everyone pays more cause of their practices. Radio said this pay to have stuff in the store will be shut down, gov passing a law on it now so if it does happen what five years like the bread scandal?

No Edward, I just don't get all bent out of shape if some vendor overprices an item I want to buy, I just don't buy from them. Most big box stores have price matching and I have used that a few times to save 10% off another vendor's price at their competitor. With online shopping and most vendors posting prices online even for in store purchases it isn't that hard to find a better price if someone is charging an outrageous price. Twenty or thirty years ago your point would been more valid than today.
Warren, yes I believe there is price fixing. Not sure what individual buyers can do about it, I guess we need to rely on the legal system to act.

the legal system? Legal system is a joke. Listen to Am 640 Radio and callers with real life experience. Even worse is the Landlord and Tennant system. I think people started a class action law suit on bread and that got some attention. No one could run a bus like gov runs stuff here. 12,000 cars stolen in Toronto last year. How is that even possible.
