Maximum weight/dimensions for hinged box lid?

I’m making a pair of cedar keepsake boxes for a friend’s kids. Box dimensions will be 24”Wx14”Dx10”H. I was planning on using Horton stop hinges (https://www.horton-brasses.com/PB-403.asp). Assuming I use a 1/4” thick inset top for the lid to keep weight reasonable and use extra long screws for the hinges, does anyone see an issue with that setup? Or do I need to come up with a more durable hinge solution?

If the lid is 24" wide, I would think you would want more than a pair of hinges just for alignment purposes if not for weight. A piano type hinge might work better for heavy use but wouldn't have the stop feature.

Your project might be small enough for these notes to not apply.

For toy boxes to protect kids' fingers, I like the no-slam hinges that Rockler sells: https://www.rockler.com/lid-stay-tor...-rustic-bronze

They come in different load sizes that you select based on the weight and width of your lid. Use the torsion calculator on that page to determine how many inch-pounds you need to support.

Just noting that if there's a chance that kids will sit on the lid (mine do), 1/4" might not be enough.

Those lid stay hinges are genius. Click the pics left of the main pic to see a good video
