Just to add, I often run mine on low speed, which is around 700 RPM. This is nice for sanding end grain without burning.

I found somewhere on the web that 60 miles per hour was the ideal speed for coated abrasives. I stored a shop smith for a friend for several years and had all of the instructions. I did not use it much nor did I read the instructions.

Zachary is suggesting 20 MPH. Which leads to less burning. Burning is a big problem with disc sanders. I have to keep trying to remember if the speed is faster or slower depending on where the wood touches the disc?

Faster on the edge zero at the center. That is why a ferris wheel is so low RPMs.
