    Office Credenza

Just finished up a credenza for the office. This is mission-ish style as there is no through tenons or exposed pins. Usually I like to use a 1 inch thick top, but I did not want to pay for shipping for a few boards. Unfortunately, I can’t get 5/4 QSWO locally. Was able to get a hair under 7/8 out of 4/4 boards for the top.

I will post another pic of the top once I move the credenza inside.

The right-side panel had quite a bit of curl…I was a little worried it may be a little too much figure. Curl on QSWO sometimes looks blotchy when finished. Here is the right side with water on it when I was doing the grain raising step.

Here is a closer view of the board finished.

I used the rest of the board of the right panel for one of the shelves. You can view the shelf at 100% size, and see it has a pretty good figure.

Very nice! What finish schedule did you use?

Wow, that is just gorgeous, from the wood, to the workmanship, to the finish. The hardware is pretty sweet, too, including those magnetic catches. Never seen any like that before.

Looks great, fantastic actually! Love the quarter sawn White Oak, too.

For the finish I used the method prescribed by Jeff Jewitt in this document: https://homesteadfinishingproducts.com/stickley.pdf

The actual combination of dye and gel stain I used is not in the document. I have finished previous pieces using “Centennial” formula and the finish is dark (which the wife likes). For the office furniture, I wanted to go a little lighter, so I used Antique Walnut gel stain instead of the Java gel stain. So, the combination for “staining” is Dark Mission Brown dye and Antique Walnut gel stain.

The other difference is I used Zar oil based poly with matte sheen instead of arm-r-seal. I pre-finish prior to assembly as much as possible and apply the poly with the pieces laying horizontally. This allows the vanish to level out nicely.

The cabinet pulls are the Stickley reproductions available at Rockler. The magnetic catches I found on Amazon and figured I would give them a try. They seem OK, but these are not "high end". However, I have not found anything better at the moment.

Really like this piece and your use of the figured lumber! I just scored a haul of white oak this weekend so it was timely inspiration to see your project.

Very nice work Christian - I like the lighter finish also and have done the same as you, substituted Varathane dark walnut. Beautiful piece.

Beautifully made, love the proportions. Not sure about the fax machine…….not really sure why it belongs in an office!
