Craigslist has multiple planers, Los Angeles area

Browsing the local craigslist here in LA I see there is an inordinate number of heavy duty planers for sale -

15" General Intl helical head $2,900
    22" Powermatic helical head $6,000
    16" Oliver helical head $3,800
    20" Grizzly single phase $2,200
    15" Grizzly $950
24" American Woodworking Machine Co $899 (extreme project!)
    36" Oliver $6,000
    15" Transpower helical head $1,400
    20" Craftsman $1,200
    18" Crescent $1,995
    20" Grizzly $2,800
    24" Oliver 299-D $3,000

I don't know what's going on, and I'm not in the market for a planer, but that number of planer for sale at one time is not something I remember seeing before.
Thought it may be of interest to someone.

    cheers, Mark

Slider table saws are getting more commonly seen also.

Depending on the condition, both of those Olivers are good prices. People usually bid up the 299s at auction. Im sure they are great planers, but i question spending $6,000+ on a used machine that could be approaching its 90th birthday. I bid on a few over the years, because it's one of the more compact 24" industrial machines. Also, one of the few 24" industrial machines that came with a 5hp cutterhead motor versus 7.5hp+.

I havent paid as much attention to the used markets recently, but i hope your experience is a sign of things returning back to 'normal' on the used market.

Link to the American planer for 899. Age is 1898-1925 when American merged with Yates.

Tom, that powermatic has been on eBay for a year or two. I think the owner thinks it's like a porsche barn find or something.
