Shelf for an End Table, free standing.

The Boss wants a shelf added to the end table beside her chair, so..

Based loosely on the Sofa Server from Paul Sellers' Masterclass videos (FREE!) I will be switching out the shelf he used as a stretcher, with a pair of 1 x 3s ....five inches or so from the feet. "Legs" will be through dovetailed to the shelf....

Have 3 planks of 1x6 Ash lumber down in the shop, for now.....Saturday, intend to cut things rough for length....and do a bit of stock prep.....Goal being to have 3 panels glued up....shelf and both legs...

    Stay tuned...(Laundry Detail, today)

Well, that panel was set aside for a while...needed the tablesaw
    Glue-up Monday, still waiting.JPG
So, this is how the other face looks....

Needed the tablesaw because.....working of 6 blanks to glue up into the panel for the legs....cross cut...rip a bad edge off...cross cut for square...cross cut couple more blanks as two wound up too narrow (eh, compost happens) and FINALLY have enough for 2 panels at 16" wide.....had the joint a few edges...face plane a few blanks( was a bit TOO rough, and cupped) until finally,....
    Glue-up Monday, one leg clamped.JPG
We had the first panel glued up, and out of the way....worked on the 2nd one a bit, until..
    Glue-up Monday, 3rd hand.JPG
Clamps & Cauls...Bench vise does make a good 3rd hand during glue ups,BTW...
    Glue-up Monday, 2nd leg.JPG
Trying to pull this into flat....will let this sit right there for a day.....

later, I'll clean up the 2 leg panels first...need to lay out dovetail pins...and cut that big curve to make the feet.

I also need to mill 2 stretchers that will be through mortised into the legs...might even do a housed version of that...

We'll see how this week goes along...stay tuned..

Part one of Leg Work, today..

Both panels were removed from the clamps...beltsanded to clean up the glue lines...Panels were then squared up. Then made a small jig, to draw a 6" radius ...and then bandsawed the lines..1st one didn't turn out too bad..
    Terrible Tuesday, one leg done.JPG
2nd one? Was having "issues" and decided to split...
    Terrible Tuesday, #2 split.JPG
So, back into the clamps it goes....can always work on the 1st one for a while. Will try to layout for pins after #2 leaves the vise...

Pipe clamps also came off today..
    Terrible Tuesday, need removed.JPG
But not the cauls, just yet....need to clean up the glue lines, square the ends, and set a marking gauge for the thickness of the panel, once it is flat...may just keep the panel over on the tablesaw, for now...

    Stay tuned..

Sometimes, we tend to over-think a task....but, not today...Panel was too wide and too tall to be in the end vise, so...
    Dovetail work, vise and clamp.JPG
Leg vise and a clamp will do just fine....simple selection of tools?
    Dovetail work, needful things.JPG
About all I need to layout dovetails...along with a saw...
    Dovetail work, Disston No.4.JPG
    Just a Disston No.4 Backsaw....
    Dovetail work, mark the waste.JPG
Be sure to mark the waste....and try to stay in the waste side of the lines..
    Dovetail work, almost sawn.JPG

Just got done sharpening up a few chisels....have to decide where to do the chopping....

Don't forget something to sit on, while you work..
    Dovetail work, shop stool.JPG
    As for that Radius Jig?
Dovetail work, 6 in. Radius jig.JPG
    Nothing fancy...

    Try again tomorrow...stay tuned..

1 hour in the shop, today....today being PayDay, meant errands to run, bills to pay....and getting a bit too tired....was glad I could just sit down...
    Dovetail work, shop stool.JPG
To do some chopping...Needed a back stop...because of the way the leg#1 HAD to sit on the bench,,,and be clamped in place..
    Wed. Chopping, Backstop.JPG
Flat board wasn't quite wide enough, added in the extra...up tight against the bandsaw...Got out a selection of chisels, and a hammer..
    Wed. Chopping, tools.JPG
And then ran the marking gauge a few more times...
    Wed. Chopping, Marking the lines.JPG
So the chisel has a place to start in...
    Wed. Chopping, lot of pins.JPG
Took a while..no rush...start with the show face, chop down 1/2 way..then flip the board over, and complete the chopping...LOTS of chips..
    Wed. Chopping, Mr. Chips.JPG
One bad spot....a flake let loose, and had to be glued back in place...
    Wed. Chopping, repaired.JPG
So, once the glue has cured...I can stand this board back up in the leg vise, and pare a bit...Then transfer a few marks....some to the Top shelf panel, and some to Leg #2 to lay out it's pins.

Doctor visit tomorrow, have a pair of staples to get taken out...and get checked out...Shop time may wait a awhile....we'll see...
    Stay tuned...

Transferring layout marks...from one pin board to the next Pin Board..
    Dovetails, Transferring .JPG
Merely needs a SHARP #2 Pencil....then flip things around...
    Dovetails, ready to saw .JPG
Ready to finish the new layouts, and get the backsaw ready to go
    Shop tour, two.JPG
Meanwhile, I can clean up the top shelf..and start to lay out the tails...using a completed pin board...as soon as I decide which face of the top panel will be the "show" face..

Trying out a new camera...got tired of that LITTLE Polaroid thing...

    so....
    Dovetail Work, saw .JPG
Saw work on second leg blank has been done..
    Dovetail Work, Moxxon vise.jpg

    Dovetail Work, show side .JPG

    Bad day, another repair.JPG

    Split #2...
    Bad day,2nd split today.jpg
While I was trying to fit the pins with the tails...

Removed 99% of the waste between the pins, this morning...with a (wait for it..) Coping saw....then pared the rest with a chisel or 2...

Pins on leg #1 have been fitted to the tails....then that leg and that end of the shelf were banged together with well spread out glue....checked and adjust for square..

    Taking a Lunch Break at the moment..before I haul a camera to the shop.....Film @2300 hrs..I hope..

    Waste removal tools..
    Sunday work, tool kit .JPG
And, what they were working on..
    Sunday work, Waste removal.JPG
The reason for the 18" clamp..was because the panel tried to split, again...
Sunday work, glued up, squared up.JPG
Leg#1 has been fitted, glued, and squared up....

Another plank has been brought to the shop...and this is about all the good wood was in it..
Sunday work, 2 stretchers chilling out.jpg
    2 stretchers...plus just over a foot of 1 x 6 left over...stretchers are 26" long....plank was 1 x 6 x 5', BTW..

Update time...Trying to figure out HOW to saw the tails...
    Monday, Monday, Sabre saw .JPG
Well..I clamped the panel down to the bench..and ran this.....then reset the panel back onto the bench a bit..and chopped out the waste...got down to the last whack on a chisel..and broke a chip out of the edge..grabbed another the same width...and cleaned things up......then fitted the leg's pins to the tails....a pare here, a slice there....

Spread the glue around with a brush...and start to assemble things...leg panel starts to do the splits..again...we have ways

    Monday, Monday, Glued uo.JPG
Closed up both splits with glue and clamps...and finished clamping things in place...had to add a caul for the pipe clamps..
Monday, Monday, caul in use .JPG

That is what I get, for working in the shop on a Monday..
    Monday, Clamping tools .JPG
Needed a few tools to help tighten the clamps....as for that chipout?
    Monday, wrong chip out .JPG
That's going to take a bit of work to fix...

    Stay tuned..
