    Dimensional Signage

    Hey all!
I got an inquiry recently for some dimensional sign letters 3/4" to 1" thick. I've never had to do anything thicker than 3/8" or so.
    I have a 150w co2 laser.
What would be the best material to be used for this? The letters will be painted after they are cut, so the material would need to be able to accept paint. I can cut and laminate as well, but prefer not to. The lighter weight the better but not a deal breaker if its heavy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Typical materials for that kind of signage and lettering includes HDU and PVC. I'm not sure that the laser is the best way to cut "thick", however. It's more of a CNC thing in the industry.

You cannot cut PVC with a laser engraver as it produces a dangerous gas and is corrosive to your laser engraver's components. Thick material is best machined on a CNC, PVC is my choice for thick letters but I have used half inch thick solid surface material for a large number of sign projects I did at CNU for both interior and exterior signs.
