This is likely not what you are looking for, but I figured that I would try to help anyway. I don't see how you could have black letters showing on the black lightning bolt where they overlap. Maybe I am missing something, especially before my second cuppa.
Take a look and let me know what is wrong and maybe I can fix it.

edit: Since your post is in the engraving section, I guess I should ask what you are doing with the design. It may enable me to do a better job of this.

Not having the original graphic, I just traced and re-did the text. I'd do something like this, do an offset around the text that you can boolean subtract from the lightening bolt and leave a void to put the text back into. This was done in LightBurn, but you can obviously do the same in CorelDraw as well. I've attached an .svg of the file if you desire. You'll need to rename it without the .txt extension.

I did similar to Steve but in Corel-- I've learned to use the 'trim' functions a bit better lately-
Expand the pic, I printed how I did it right on the pic

    storm2.jpg
the trick is the box I drew around the text, then had the 'back minus front' option do it's thing, which removed the box and closed the edges of the lightning bolt where it was cut. If the order of the bolt and the box are reversed, then the 'front minus back' option will do the same thing

I would use a thick white outline on the text and move it to the front of the drawing.

Another option would be to create a contour around the text and then do the trim with the contour. It wouldn't be just a simple box. And you can adjust the contour distance.

    Bert,
I guess I would draw a rectangle to length and height.
Then add nodes to the center of length.
Put a value in the nudge box and voila!
    Perfect "bowtie".

Yeah, it's you ;^) CorelDraw gives you plenty of rope to hang yourself with, but it won't tell you where the rope is or how to tie a hangman's knot...

I'm guessing that you used the rectangle tool to create your initial shape. If so, you can't arbitrarily add nodes because, by definition, the rectangle is defined by its four corners that define four sides and you want to add more sides so it can't remain a rectangle. What you need to do is "convert to curves" which then gives you the ability to arbitrarily modify the object shape. Just select the rectangle and press Ctl-Q (or click menu Arrange/Convert to Curves) to change it from a Rectangle to a Curve. Then you can add nodes, move nodes around, make segments be either straight or curved, etc.
