Pre-internet, experts with reputations were sought out for passing on knowledge. Tage Frid, Fine Wooodworking, classes from people good at teaching, word of mouth. It was important to establish relationships with people with more experience. Forums were great, everyone had a microphone.

I have learned so much over the years reading forums. No more going to see some old guy that knew a lot. For example, I was able to build a 20 hp phase converter, insulate my building, move and hoist equipment, buy lumber, buy machinery and tooling, and do all kinds of dust collection with knowledge learned in forums.

However, the other side of the coin is the previously mentioned forum. It used to be somewhat interesting as a woodworking knowledge source. However, there was this basement where people would park their manners at the door, and let fly with the most vile racist lies and attacks. It became a safe zone for smug sharing of grievance. I felt their pain, so many men with their panties in a twist, I don't know how they could sit at a computer and type.

It was fun for a while to check in and join one side or the other in political arguments. However, after a while the ones who shouted longest and loudest were the only ones left., a mirror of public discourse.

I hope that Sawmill Creek can continue to be a place where people can respect each other as people by not allowing lies and hatred.
That describes exactly a fishing site I used to really like. Went the same way sadly.

Interesting how not being anonymous (SMC) gets people to behave themselves.

The Australian forum does not require names and is at least as good as SMC with no obnoxious posting. I have no idea of the forum being spoken of in this thread and it seems to be a place to avoid.

Couldn’t agree more with the thoughts expressed about this and that “other” forum. I visit this one every day and participate on a regular basis. I look at the other one about once a week (if that) to see if the 2 or 3 members whose knowledge I respect have posted anything.

Gave up on them recently as they seem to have lost control of their login system and mechanism for password resets. I keep requesting the link to reset and never get a reply. Either they all died or it is a ghost site.

Yes. Thank you SMC community. I've been in a few non-woodworking forums, where the slow death began with increasingly hateful political arguments. That drove away new members and things degenerated because the mods didn't want to drive off the regulars.

Me too. I was a long term watcher but recently my password no longer worked. I can get no response to a password reset request and each time I try to establish a new account it tells me my email is already being used by someone else. I don't normally participate in off topic discussions due to the inflammatory nature of most but really liked the woodworking sections. Oh well, change is good.

Am I the only one who does not know what that site is?

So did I and other than obvious porn sites (and "woodporn" that clearly means exceptional lumber like this 'https://talaricohardwoods.com/wood-porn/ I don't know what site(s) the op is referring to. Not that I want to frequent a woodworking site with contentious political arguments, and I do appreciate this site's character, but I am curious what I am missing. Anyone care to elucidate?

I'm in agreement with everyone here, it's up to the moderators.
I've been a moderator at woodturners resource ('http://www.woodturnersresource.com)
for many years, and it's not difficult to keep those types of posts and posters off the forum.
If it's been allowed to get so far out of control that members are leaving, it means the moderators are AWOL or in agreement.

There will always be strong opinions and disagreements on forums, no matter the subject.
IMO, There is certainly no need to allow politics and religion into crafts or trades type of forums, there are appropriate places for those who want to discuss those topics.

There seems to be a pretty simple solution to places you don't care for - just don't go there.

    I totally agree

Interesting to note: Any plea for disclosure of said offender are not only going unanswered, they are being deleted.
    Hmm...
How am I supposed to avoid it if I don't know which one it is?
Sucks being a sheep when no-one will lead.

I believe the concern here is a legal one. SMC avoids legal trouble with this policy.
