Houndstooth dovetails - pin board thickness?

Building a desk with a 3/4 top and bottom and sides - basically a big box that will house a single drawer inside. I’d like to use houndstooth dovetails for the joints which will look great on sides (tails) and, although not as intended, the tops of the tails will add some interest to the top (pin board?).

wondering if 3/4 is thick enough to allow for the smaller pins? Been doing some searches and all the examples the pin board looks pretty thick and perhaps this is for joining at least 1 larger board?

Dave, just noting that houndstooth dovetails are the cover article in the October 22 issue of Fine Woodworking. Haven't read it so dont know if your question is addressed.
