Hi Charley, the use of a riving knife or splitter is also required to prevent the workpiece from accidentally contacting the rear of the blade, which results in a kickback, regardless of whether it’s solid timber or sheet goods.

Likewise a crown guard prevents the work from accidentally contacting the top of the blade, again resulting in a kickback.

If you can’t use a guard for the operation there are 2 possibilities,

    1) you’re using the wrong machine for the task ( grooving a board on edge on a saw, a task the shaper is built and guarded for)

    2) you’re using the wrong guard.

In some instances, grooving for example, a stock feeder could replace the guard if it provides adequate protection, Regards, Rod.

I’ve got a Shark Guard ARK on both my Unisaws. Excellent products. I had a pop up splitter before that and it worked well, but I wanted dust collection.
