Super impressed with your work! Almost too pretty to use. I also admire your experimentation with fundamental geometry. Curious what is your preferred hang angle, pitch, plate length/width etc. for dovetail saw? Can’t think of anyone with more experience. Thanks!

Hi Mike. I am more impressed with your builds. I should be so talented.
The different hang angles, of course, have different aggressiveness, given the same filing. But if you are using a moxon, for example, you may prefer to use a 32* hang dovetail to keep your wrist from being too bent. The 45* hang may assist when cutting half blinds, because of the angle, or if you are just looking for something more aggressive. The 38* hang is just the middle of the road. It is just a matter of preference. I personally like the 38* most of the time, but since I do not use them all the time as others do, I seem to vary a bit. For really small stock I will often grab one of my gent saws. The 0.015" plate and up to 20ppi come in handy for things like 1/4" corner round , etc. I do not generally make 0.015" western dovetail saws as I prefer the rigidity of the 0.018- 0.020" plates. I made a couple with a 0.015" plate, but just seem to like the 0.020" better. For folks that like to cut to the line, the 17ppi to 19ppi is a nice smooth cut with the 0.020 plate. Albeit a bit slower, depending on stock thickness. Most of the time I prefer 15ppi or 16ppi depending on wood species, but go up to 20ppi. Rough on the eyeballs though to sharpen. As always, all things are a combination of hang, ppi, and rake. I don't generally file fleam in my dovetail saws. As far as the lamb's tongues.....I really just think they are more pleasing to the eye and can hopefully take some of the stress off of the neck area. The 12" plate just keeps me from pulling back to far and a slight balance difference. Whether it is a 6" plate or a 12" plate, It is just what you are used to. Stop by sometime if you want to try a few and compare. I am always ready to put on more coffee and chat a bit.

Every time I think I have kicked the saw addiction, I have a relapse and try again. Yesterday, I just finally found a gun shop that does actual gun bluing locally. Oh boy. Another dealer to feed the addiction.
