I’m sure the back legs really do come through the front legs. I saw a tapered reamer with a side cutter many years ago to make such a hole after drilling the base hole. Most of the other holes will have some taper also.
Spokes with an end cut and small wedge to spread the end as it’s driven home come to mind.
You can do a lot with very little! You can do a little more with a lot!
