I’m impressed with the cut of the bed angle on the ebony. Ebony is a very unique wood to work brittle and unforgiving.
    Nice work.

Thanks! The toughest thing to deal with so far is the very fine Ebony dust that clings to everything.

Yep your right I have forgotten about the dust.
Be careful with that dust I’m pretty sure it’s not supposed to be inside a human body.
That last piece of ebony I had. I polished it to perfection and gave it to my best friend. He keeps it on his desk to admire nature’s beautiful work. It’s a 3x3x8 tall block for its size it’s incredibly heavy.

I believe the dust gave me a sinus infection when I first started working more with the Ebony in January. It never bothered me in the past but now it does.

Six of eight out of the clamps and trimmed of excess before shaping. The Cocobolo on Ebony looks great already, can't wait to see those colors when finish is applied!

Very nice planes. To better show your work, borrow a better phone. Everybody has one.

Once this batch is done I'll use my wife's phone and take the photos outside. Hopefully those photos will be a big improvement.

Well, due to overtime at work and being under the weather I didn't make as much progress as I wanted to this week however the planes bodies are now shaped and sanded. I really like the look of the two species planes!

This morning I have a bit of time to work on the hybrid pins before we get ready and go for a mother's day get together. So, what's your opinion on pin rod choice, aluminum or brass? I do like the contemporary look of the aluminum pin on the all Ebony planes but the brass is a much nicer material. Brass will be used with the Cocobolo, Rosewood and Curly Maple sided planes but now I'm thinking brass on the all Ebony is probably more fitting.

Either way I'll probably go with the brass on all planes from now on because it ties together the overall high quality and looks.

    Thoughts?

A little bit of an update. I used brass rod on all the planes and I'm very pleased with how they look. The Ebony wedges are rough cut and now it's time to enter the fit & finish stage.

I'm taking orders for batch 3 if anyone is interested. This batch will begin Memorial day weekend and ship at the end of June or so.

One last update until next weekend when I'll have photos of the finished planes. Now the focus is on prepping the Hock blades, fit the wedges and apply the finish. This batch will start shipping next weekend. Batch three, a total of six will start Memorial Day Weekend. Two of the six are already reserved.

    Thanks again guys!

A none photo update for today.

As of today only 18 more of these Gaboon Ebony apron planes will be built. Reason being that is all the Ebony cutoff stock I have on hand. If I had to order more wood I just couldn't make and sell these at such a fair price with the Hock blades. If your interested in one of these 18 please send me a note. All Ebony or Ebony body with Bubinga, Cocobolo, Rosewood or Curly Maple sides are options for the last 18.

    Thanks!

I'm spending Sunday afternoon in the studio with some Hock blades and the Tormek T-8. A perfect day for sharpening, nice breeze coming through the windows and listening to good music.
