Planing hard maple thin stock 2&1/2” wide the force sheared the retaining screw. Never happened before.
Zinc is not that strong. I had a spare but decided to strengthen the screw.
Using a drill press I drilled a hole down the full length to the fan out end. Slow drilling with frequent swarf removal.
I used a snug twisted nail, put epoxy in the hole and covered the spiral in epoxy. Tapped the nail gently into the hole. Cut the end off with a hacksaw, small dab of epoxy on the end to prevent rust.
Finished my maple pieces without incident.
Not as much work as you think, just need a twisted nail!
