    dust collection

    morning everyone,
i have an old powermatic 73 and it still is running fine for me,
i replaced the filter bag some years ago which a at the time great improvement,
i think its time to start looking for a replacement bag again.
i also have looked at the oneida can filter, but im not sure if it would fit( 14" collar on my my machine.)

was hoping some of you would chime in with some suggestions for a better bag or if the oneida filter is a better way to go.

    Thanks
    Eric

It depends on how much you want to focus on dust collection. If you are worried about breathing dust there's three pieces to the puzzle....capturing as much as possible at each tool, capturing airborne particles and a way to quantify particles in the air.

I started with a Delta 1200cfm with 30 micron bags. Like you, replaced the bags (Oneida 1 mic) but found they accumulate dust on the outside which goes airborne each time the collector is cycled. I've since upgraded to a SDD vented outside utilizing the Delta motor. I've also added a shop made air filter made with 4x FPR10 furnace filters and a 4000cfm fan. I also revisited source collection improving shrouds adding overarm to my TS.

At some point in my dust collection journey I decided I wanted to breathe as little dust as possible AND to woodwork without a mask. With the above, I have been able to achieve that with the exception of a few sanding operations. This may be more than you want to do but the can filter will certainly be an improvement. I've always had an excellent experience with Oneida's tech support....maybe they'll have a solution (adapter) for adding their can to your collector.
    Thanks,
    Fred

    Hi Eric

I replaced the pleated filter that came with my Rockler DustRight 750 with a POWERTEC 70006 Dust Collector Bag, 15" x 24", 1 Micron Filter on Amazon, it's supposed to fit 14" to 14.75". The pleated filters are so hard to clean, the bags are quick and easy.

When I ran a bagger I upgraded to an American Fabric Filter bag. Their site has a sizing tool and you will be amazed at how undersized most commercial filter bags are. A properly sized bag will do wonders for the efficiency of the machine and the quality of the return air.

Yup. And a properly sized and well designed filter bag will not inflate like a hard balloon, either.

Yes, a well designed filtration bag wil flow air (but not fine dust) at a rate equal to or greater than the air coming in from the blower. A company like AFF can make that happen when one wants or needs to use a bag filtration system.

Some questions: (1) how do you clean the collector bag? How messy is it? Are you using the Dust Right for saw, jointer planer? I need a dust collector and the Dust Right and Mini Gorilla are on my short list.

Onieda isn't the only place to find pleated filters , and they are overpriced . Look around a little , you could save some $$ . I've bought from ACS - Air Cleaning Specialists . Less than half of Oneida .

Be aware that Oneida filters are HEPA, but the filters from ACS are MERV 15 at the highest. That's fine for keeping the shop clean, but not for filtering air that your going to breathe directly.

    Sorry for the late reply.
I am using it for a saw, shaper, jointer, planer & drum sander. I move the hose from machine to machine using a quick connect. The Dust Right is somewhat under powered and has alot of vibration. When I turn it off, as it is slowing down the whole machine shakes. Replacing it with a Harvey G700 that arrived 2 days ago.
