I expected more of a story to go with this....

So, there I was, cutting a mortise in my concrete driveway when.....

That is no fun at all. How long did it take you to realize what had happened?

Had the same happen to a laminated mortise chisel some years back. Can't remember the brand but did have a Sheffield stamp in the side. It was a 5/16" model and happened in oak. Meh, I got it cheap because I wanted to experiment with pig-stickers.

@Andrew lol yes that would have made it more interesting. I was chopping the mortise in purple heart actually, which is getting pretty close to concrete I guess. @Phil This is an old pig sticker too. I saw the break immediately, spent the next 20 minutes fixing it. Used an angle grinder clamped in my vise to get an approximately correct bevel, then finished up on a grinding wheel and finally hand honing. Worked well enough to finish the frame I was making, hopefully lasts a little while yet.

Hey, I've got one that looks just like that, except I didn't keep the tip piece. I really need to fix that one of these days.

Looks like you still have a bit of hardened steel left, that’s good. Tune it up a bit. With no prying, the cardinal sin, you may get another 50 years out of it.
