Once the ends were leveled up, and the long sides matched up...almost..

Kept checking...A small high spot here and there....used that Jack plane, keeping the heel ON a leveled spot, and plane the high spots down...Figured I could see IF that #79 will fit..

Lid now fits level all around...a couple marks to show where the hinges will go, and which way the lid sits...made a "^" across both about where a latch might go.....
Need a keeper of some sort...to keep the plane from sliding around in there..

Something like this...need to notch around the cutter/cap iron...and then glue it in place...

I added another one, that will sit under the handle...will let the glue cure a day or 2...

Got the bench all cleaned off, finally....only to "load it up", again....Start up for Box #2

Stanley No. 68 Marking Gauge (SW), a couple squares, a marking knife, and that 6" Stanley SW bevel gauge...and a pencil or two...I did get the first set of pins laid out..

And also got down a "Special Saw" to do the sawing with...

Bar acts as a depth stop...have it set at 1/2" deep. I can set this set with either the fine teeth, or the coarser Rip teeth...been a while, see IF I remember how to use it...

Well, I WAS going to give that saw a test drive....except that Left toes were getting very bad charlie horses....along with the back of the right thigh....Uncle SIR Charles was being very nasty, tonight.

Tomorrow being a Monday, shop might just be closed for the day...

Box #1 now has hinges installed...and a latch....been sanded to 220, holes in the corners of the lid have Ash Plugs...have another solution for the bottom corner holes...need a shopping trip...

Camera battery ran out of juice,,,need to process the photos a bit, before I post them....Shoptime? 1540 hrs to 1710 hrs....about..90 minutes?

Attach a latch....fill a few holes in the lid's corners...

Give all the sharp corners a slight round-over, and sand to 220 grit, for now

Shoptime? Will see later, when I get back to home station....good news? NO Wake-up call from Uncle Charles (horse) this morning....first time since last Friday.....

Might see how that Bishop saw does...now that the camera battery is charged back up...

Too long of a dreary, rainy day...40 mile drive each way. Then walk around in Menard's trying to find all the things on a shopping list....only to get yelled at by the Boss because of either wrong size or wrong type of bottle...Low air pressure alarm on the car...had to stop at the Chevy Dealership on the way home....they had to plug a small hole in the tire. Took longer to get home, got caught by a s l o w m o v i n g 120 car Unit grain train...doing about...5 mph...even stopped once...

Picked up a few items for the shop, and a bite to eat....now? NEED a NAP!


Doctor decide to just let a new/old pill run it's course....it is keeping the BP spikes away, but is behind a lot of the Uncle Charles' WAKE UP calls....water pill...Back to leg therapy Friday. ( BP is now at 128/74, BTW)

Ok...Brass corners plates bought...

And a few cheap brushes....The pins that were sawn yesterday..

Were worked over this morning....

Knife wall the baseline, chop about 1/2 way down...flip over, and remove the rest of the waste...stand this board up on the "tail" board..

And with the inside faces FACING the correct way....trace around each pin..

Finish the marking out, then over to the bandsaw..

Then chop out the waste, starting with the outside face, then flip over, and finish the chops....then a dry fit...

Not too dreadful? Repeat the above for corner No.2...

These take a little bit longer than those Finger/Box Joints did. spent about 90 minutes IN the shop, today...got 2 out of 4 corners done. Wasn't really in any hurry...so, no rushing around.

Once the corners are done..rebates need done, and grooves for the lid made...then MAYBE a glue-up..?

There WAS a label that needed removed...not sure what glue they used, but it can't be just pulled of...so..

We have ways, called a Stanley No. 70....and this is what it was made for..

They used to remove the labels off of old wooden shipping crates, re-label them, and ship them back out...and Stanley made a plane to do that task...

These 2 are Stanley SW tools....a 6" bevel gauge (with a "Blued" blade) and that Stanley No. 65, with the backwards head, that I'll need to turn around...has a Brass "Mustache "as a wear plate..

Ok..lets see...over slept this morning..missed my appointment for Therapy on my legs. Pills for Breakfast? I guess....1st Breakfast, anyway...

About 10:30am...meandered to the shop.....Diet Mountain Dew and a fully charged camera in tow....Might see IF I can get a bit done?

Had 2 more corners to dovetail up..Pins to get laid out..

Noticed the marking gauge was having trouble...dull cutter...took the time to also turn the head around to where it belonged.

Brass wear plate is supposed to face the cutter...Stanley No. 65 SW...Then finish the marking out..Bishop No.10 to make the cuts...Clamp the pin board good face up..

Select the right chisel to fit...

Watch out...sometimes them chips will fly straight back at you...and..bounce off..

Pin board, corner #3.....match it up to Tail Board #3...stand pin board up on tail board, trace around the pins with a SHARP pencil..

When the layout lines are done, take tailboard to the bandsaw (does the next task better than I do with a hand saw)cut on the waste side of the lines...make sure you have the correct "Waste" marked...then chop out the waste as with the pins....half & half....then test for fit..

Ok..test to see how Corner #3 fits? (IF it takes a mallet to test the fit, might be too tight?)

First try..barely got it to even start....did NOT want to split things, Pared a sticky spot, until it would fit together...one tail had a slight bulge in the middle..pared that flat...fits much better..

Repeat all the above madness ( takes about 40-45 minutes, total.for each corner..but, who is in a hurry?) and then dry fit all 4 corners...

Set the plywood panel for the bottom to mark out for rebates..

As the rebates for the ends will be a bit different size, than the side one will be...

Craftsman No. 3720 (Sargent No. 79) will help build the box it will be calling home...leg vise needed a helper...

Ok...Pine Panel was trimmed, although I did use the tablesaw for that task. Now, about those "Blowouts" in the rebates...

I had a different idea for the bottom ones...which will also dress these boxes up just a bit..

Bought 2 of these packages....large Brass corner trim...too big for the lid...but..

Just right for the bottom corners...and, no need to try to plug that ugly hole....all 4 corners on Box No.1 are done....Box No.2 will get these when it is done.

The floor had a decided "Crunch" feeling to it..

The "Chop" is a 2 x 6 slab of Sycamore....that was rived for a 6 x 6 beam...it is own it's second pipe clamp...as the first was worn out...Leg Vise is actually older than this bench..by about 5 years...and the bench is just over 7 years old. Just getting broken in?

Maybe tomorrow, I can get something done? "Time Clock" says it is now 1:45pm on a Friday.....I think I might have been working way too hard for a Friday? My back right between the shoulder blades says it is..and.....NOT A SINGLE BEER IN THE HOUSE?

Set up to plough 4 grooves...

Check to make sure I was deep enough ALL the way along the grooves..

One of the ends had a high spot right about where the Stanley 45 was starting it's run...re-jigged to get things to depth..
Panel needed a rebate milled, to fit into that groove..

This was the end that wasn't quite deep enough...

Was finally able to do that glue up...AFTER I had marked out WHERE to run the saw, to split off the lid from the box.....on the OUTSIDE of the box.
