    Looking for certain wood!

Hey everyone, I have to build some solid wooden pyramids for a guy to paint. What wood is best for that? Where can I get it? I need at least 3”sq wood. I’ve looked for poplar but can’t find it around! He don’t want pieces glued together so it has to be solid. Thanks again

Poplar is a good species for you. It machines well. It is fine-grained, so it takes paint well. It is available dried. It is available 12/4 and 16/4. It is inexpensive.

Look for hardwood dealers in your area. Conventional lumber yards will not carry it.

Most any hardwood lumber yard should have 12/4 (twelve quarter) poplar. It would be a little over3” in the rough. 4x4 at any store will be about 3-1/2”

Pretty easy to find thick basswood. Look for carving wood suppliers.

Keim Lumber - down in Charm Ohio - should also be able to help you out

Yoder Lumber is also down by Charm

All of them should be able to hook you up with 12/4 poplar - or soft maple - or basswood. The maple might be the most economical right now.

Hmm, that's interesting. My local sawmill (Almendingers) has 16/4 poplar for $4 bf. They don't list 12/4 or 16/4 maple but 8/4 soft maple is $4.50.

For some reason known only to the wood gods - poplar has been very scarce up here.
    8/4 @ Baird is $6.80 a BF.

I forgot to ask above - but - does this have to be hardwood?

Could you get by with pine?
