    I am sorry I didn't say that they are just laying there and that they are not glued yet. One does not need to pull a gap out of two boars with clamps when there is no gap.

    The reason why I prefer straight knifes in a jointer is the feed pressure from my hands very low. When the knives are sharp it's mostly moving the wood right to left across the head. As the knives get duller and the wood gets thinner or denser the more skill it takes to make flat boards.
    Insert heads cut alot like a high angle scraper plane. Plus carbide doesn't get as sharp as hss.
    It's takes more hp and handpressure with Insert head.
    I have one in my planer just to be clear I'm not a Insert head hater.🙂

    I generally do not skip the jointer, but every once in awhile, when being absolutely flat isn't a requirement for some project or component, thicknessing without it serves the purpose with one less step.
