Bleaching wood - will it eventually darken?

I'm making a table - the top is Douglas fir, the legs are red oak.

I'm bleaching both the top and the legs, and I plan on using a water-based finish to keep it all as clear and whitish as possible.

Over time will the woods darken / yellow, or will the bleaching prevent that?

    thanks, Mark

My gut says that your bleaching will delay onset of any natural darkening of the d-fir, but AFAIK, there's no way to stop it from happening permanently. A UV-resistant finish will help a little, too. It's what wood does...

If you're willing to bleach wood, you might consider staining it with a white or grey stain. The pigments in most stains are more color-fast than the wood.

Hi Jamie, is there a certain stain you can recommend? Thanks

Jim, I think you're right. I think the wood beneath the bleached layer will begin to darken / patina and will show through the outter bleached layer. I'll have to come back to this in five or six years and let you all know!
