My recollection is a bastard mill file leaves a rougher surface but will have to give it a try if there is a mill bastard in my file assortment.

The smoothest surfaces where left by sheer files. (the Superior Standard is one of my favorites to use for smoothing.) They are more like a float than a regular file.
