    Finish for a fireplace mantel

    Hi,

I am using a Curupau (Patagonia Rosewood) slab for my fireplace mantel.
There is adequate distance from the firebox to the slab, based upon the projection of the slab and the height above the firebox per code.

I am wondering however what is a good water based finish to use on the slab. I do not want to use any of my usual finishes as they are all oil based.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Regards,

I have a gas fireplace. I built a surround and mantel out of cherry, and finished it with General Finishes High Performance Topcoat, applied with a foam brush. I applied several coats and it turned out fine and has had no problems with the heat, although it doesn't really get hot.
