    Can an oil based stain be used over a water based conditioner

    Can an oil based stain be used over a water based conditioner on pine?

    Brands? If they are in current production there should be guidance either on their labels or on technical data sheets available from manufacturer.

    Also if there is sufficient extra material available, perform a test.

    I'm no expert at any of this, but can speak to one particular water-based conditioner I use. When I asked the maker, he said you can use any type of stain or dye, and I have. I use it primarily for blotch control on maple and cherry and have found it works great using an oil-based gel stain. Not sure if it applies to all water-based conditioners so as Rob said above, I would check with the manufacturer and definitely do some testing on scraps if possible.
