    Coffee Now a Healthful Beverage?

It seems the health hazards vs the health benefits of coffee have been going back and forth for decades.

New evidence suggests drinking coffee may actually be good for folks:

The latest assessments of the health effects of coffee and caffeine, its main active ingredient, are reassuring indeed. Their consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of all kinds of ailments, including Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, gallstones, depression, suicide, cirrhosis, liver cancer, melanoma and prostate cancer.

In fact, in numerous studies conducted throughout the world, consuming four or five eight-ounce cups of coffee (or about 400 milligrams of caffeine) a day has been associated with reduced death rates. In a study of more than 200,000 participants followed for up to 30 years, those who drank three to five cups of coffee a day, with or without caffeine, were 15 percent less likely to die early from all causes than were people who shunned coffee. Perhaps most dramatic was a 50 percent reduction in the risk of suicide among both men and women who were moderate coffee drinkers, perhaps by boosting production of brain chemicals that have antidepressant effects.

My cardiologist wanted me to quit coffee. I'm down to one cup a day:

I do a French press every morning. It’s like starting the day with a treat.

Wow, then we just might live forever!

We have two 12-cup Cuisinart coffee makers that are on from 7am to 2am, a burr-type grind-n-brew next to a basic 12 cup unit. When the basic pot gets below half we grind up a fresh pot. We go thru 3-4 pots every day. We also french-press 'new' coffee to test out new flavors. However, we drink 'light' coffee, not as strong as most folks drink so I doubt we're over-caffeinating. Why we like Cuisinart's aside from they DO make good coffee, is they have 4 hour off-timers. I hate nuking coffee just because the timer went off 1/2 hour earlier...

I really should do the latter. I used to work out in the mornings prior to going to work. It set a great tone for the rest of the day.

Common misconception. Lighter roasts are higher in caffeine, darker roasts are bolder in flavor but, arguably not as broad in flavor. I'm not a coffee snob; just some coffee in hot water and I'm good . Just mentioning something about caffeine levels I was surprised by when I read it.

What I should have said is lightly brewed coffee-- we use about 8 'normal' cups worth of coffee to make 12 cups...

There's lots of health benefits for people with liver damage. I'm one of those. The studies I've seen say the more coffee the better for people like me. Interesting that only paper filtered caffeinated coffee was proven in the studies to help the liver.

I have a Bunn 10 cup maker that is plugged in and ready day or night except when I unplug it to leave for trip. Coffee is my addiction. I have said a million times "With a good cup of coffee and the love of a good woman, I can withstand anything."
