How is this Planer compared to other portable planers of the same cutting capacity? I know it used to be made in Japan. Now I guess made in China. Is the quality still the same ? Any brand better than the Makita ?

I haven't heard of anyone complaining about the Makita (other than the dust hood being extra), but the DW735's seem to be the more popular choice these days for the benchtop planers. The makita is probably a bit lighter; the DW735 has a strong fan to help with chip collection.

The Makita used to be the quietest on the market. With lunchbox planers, quit is a relative term
