A good quality table slide will support the table by itself. No problems. I used a steel and ball bearing expansion slide with 2 leaves. A good point raised about a single 1' leaf. The usual place setting at a table is considered to be 2'. 18" in a bind, but Americans aren't getting any smaller! 1' leaf does not add room for another diner.

The main concern is 44 inches of cross grain with nothing under it to prevent cupping. I need to find a way to get an apron or something under it

I am passing the concern about the leaf width on to the client. I have solved the support problem. The slides I have ordered are only 2 3/8 “ high. I can add a 4” cross support in the center end of both halves and have the slides pass through them.

Thanks to all of you. I value the opinion of Creekers.

Here is the finished product. I used elongated pin holes for the leaf. It seems to work fine . The leaf ended up 16” wide. I put on 8 coats of wipe on Waterlox sanded to 600, followed by Johnson’s paste wax.CC1FFDE8-2F7D-4392-B229-5DC07951D767.jpgB4E6297C-7B4B-41D6-9463-099837CD9AB4.jpgB8956496-0D4D-4631-8DCF-7CE680C03DDD.jpgEFC9BD90-18D6-4675-9E02-34B3556FA202.jpg[ATTACH=CON]

Well done. That was a straight forward but clever solution to the problem of supporting the long grain top. I hope your clients are happy.

Some years back I made this expandable cherry table. The center folds up on a pivot to increase the length. Works very well in so far as you don't have to store the extra leaf away from the table.
I don't know where I got the mechanism idea, maybe online somewhere, but I remember you make it using the pin from a 4" brass door hinge.

That’s beautiful Mark. We were headed in that direction but the client wanted the leaf to be removable. I think cost may have figured in.

I have one that uses wooden dovetail slides that extend out from a center leg. The leg being in the center never interferes with the knees.

The leaves have a case to hold them when not in use. The table is only about 4-5 ft with no leaves. With 6 leaves (1ft each) that can be added - so when all the way out accommodates many

    No apron.

Quite versatile and gets a lot of compliments on how useful it is.

My brother made one similar but used a piece of marble for the center piece. It sat loose on a wood frame. No slides. Just a decorative feature.

This was my first with leaves. I have learned a lot. The client was very happy. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. Happy Father’s day.
